Chapter 2 Windows 98

Screenshot from 2015-10-14 22:22:26Launched after 3 years when most most of the updates and software upgradation of Windows 95 were updated. Among a lot of show drama Microsoft Launched the second edition of Windows 9x series codenamed Memphis or as commonly known as Windows 98 on June 25, 1998.

Windows 98 was a hybrid 16-bit/32-bit monolithic product that was based on MS-DOS. But like most Microsoft products launched back then it too suffered from numerous bugs and issues. However, because of a rapid acknowledgement by the Microsoft’s R&D and development team the second edition of Windows 98 was launched.

The noteworthy improvements of Windows 98 were a better and advanced Accelerated Graphic Port support and Multifunctional Universal serial bus drivers. Also Windows 98 featured and supported Web TV and multiple monitors simultaneously which was missing in the previous version of Windows.

In Windows 98, FAT 32 files were also supported that made disc partition more than 2GB possible. With More disc space it was then possible for users to keep more files in the system. This update was the most appreciated.

Unlike it’s predecessors, Windows 98 was the first OS launched by windows that supports Advanced Configuration and Power Interface and use Drive Model. Drive Model enabled the OS to standardized the driver program in multiple devices that made running of multiple peripherals on the system smoother.

However, long after the launch of Windows 98 device manufacturers developed devices unaware of the update. Hence they continued manufacturing their devices in accordance to the older driver model which made their devices incompatible with the upgrades OS.

The pinnacle of brilliance of Windows 98 was the low system requirement to run the latest Windows OS. This enabled Windows 98 easily being updated/installed in the older machines as well. It was a huge advantage for the end users as they were able to upgrade their OS without going through the trouble of upgrading their machine.

Since Windows 98 was also developed on DOS hence it could just as easily be switched to DOS mode to fix bugs and errors which was unfortunately quite frequent. Unlike its counterparts it was soon updated and improved upon and served as a benchmark for all the other OS.
